het gebouw was 21 jaar lang in aanbouw (met langdurige onderbrekingen), waardoor de geplande kosten van 874 miljoen naar bijna 5 miljard Slowaakse kronen werden verhoogd (hoewel dit cijfer wordt overdreven door de relatief hoge inflatie in de jaren negentig). Het gebouw werd uiteindelijk geopend op 14 april 2007 en huisvest alle drie de ensembles van het Slowaakse Nationale Theater, hoewel de ensembles het oude gebouw in de Oude Stad parallel blijven gebruiken. Het gebouw is ontworpen om 1700 toeschouwers per keer in zijn drie secties te bevatten.
