Tourism
Flavor the summer throughout the year!
Monte Gordo is a parish of Vila Real de Santo António in the Algarve, part of the municipality bordering the Spanish town of Ayamonte and the Rio Guadiana. Located just three kilometers away from the center of Vila Real de Santo António, between a vast pine forest and the Atlantic Ocean, was a fishing village until the 60's of the twentieth century, when the area began to develop strongly as a tourist destination , with the construction of numerous hotels.
Nowadays, the Monte Gordo hotel offer is one of the most important in the Algarve region, which, together with its extensive and beautiful beaches, mild climate and the existence of pedestrian zones in Portuguese sidewalk, makes this village one of the favorite destinations of thousands of visitors, Portuguese and foreign, every year.
The fine golden beaches of Monte Gordo and its surroundings make this villa an ideal destination to rest during the holidays. Its sandy beaches are spacious and flat so they are perfect for younger kids to play safely. The sea is quiet and slightly warmer than in other parts of the Atlantic, due to its proximity to the Mediterranean, inviting large dives.
But, in addition to the richness of the beaches, Monte Gordo has a wide range of activities in the leisure area that will please the whole family. It is worth mentioning, for example, pedestrian walks and nature walks in Monte Gordo and its surroundings, sports activities, such as golf, and nightlife, both in the various bars and discos of the area and in the famous Casino Monte Fat.
For those who prefer cultural activities, Monte Gordo has numerous religious temples, museums and archaeological sites that you can visit during your free time.
The center of Monte Gordo consists of wide streets with walks in Portuguese sidewalk. The main avenue is Av. Infante D. Henrique, a marginal avenue sealed to the traffic automobile. To get there, it is best to park the car (if you have opted for this mode of transportation) in one of the many spaces near the beach and take a walk.
Being a very flat village with no major inequalities on the ground, the place is perfect for long walks or cycling. There are several spaces where it is possible to rent a bicycle to move around the area and admire the views in a more active way. The village also has a great offer of places to eat and drink, such as restaurants and terraces. During your visit you can sample the Algarve's flavors, mainly fish based, due to the village's fishy origin.
The proximity of Monte Gordo to Spain (it is about an hour and a half from Seville), and from Faro, 50 km, are other attractions that take more and more visitors to choose this holiday destination. It is in Faro that the nearest airport is located.

Like many fishing villages, the gastronomy of Monte Gordo favors fish and shellfish. There are numerous restaurants and bars along the beach or on the main avenue of Monte Gordo with enough space inside, as well as on the terraces, where you can delight in the region's specialties.
Tuna is one of the most commonly used fish in the menus, whether grilled, cooked with onions and tomatoes, or even on pizza. Cataplanas of monkfish, cod, prawns or crab, seafood rice, grilled sardines with boiled or salted potatoes are some of the typical dishes.
Maize "popes", sometimes combined with conquilhas, chorizo or bacon, are another popular specialty in the Algarve, as is gazpacho, a cold soup that integrates summer menus.
As for desserts, the most commonly used ingredients are almonds, figs and eggs. The figs stuffed with almonds and cinnamon and toasted in the oven or the almond cakes are some of the delights that you can taste in Monte Gordo.
