Dans le contexte de la dynastie philippine, cette fortification a été construite sous le règne de Philippe III, où existait déjà une chapelle dédiée à Sainte Catherine d’Alexandrie, qui abrite toujours le portail gothique primitif.
Il a subi des dégâts importants avec le tremblement de terre de 1755.
Aujourd'hui, le fort est utilisé comme lieu de loisirs par les touristes qui exigent Praia da Rocha et le port de plaisance voisin de Portimão.
Le fort de Santa Catarina, ou forteresse de Santa Catarina de Ribamar, en Algarve, est situé dans la municipalité de Portimão, dans le district de Faro, au Portugal.
En position dominante sur une élévation à l’est de Praia da Rocha, le long de la rivière Arade, cette fortification défend le village et le barreau de la rivière Arade, coopérant avec le Fort São João do Arade sur la rive opposée du fleuve à Ferragudo.
