En el contexto de la dinastía filipina, esta fortificación se construyó en el reinado de Felipe III, donde ya había una capilla dedicada a Santa Catalina de Alejandría, que todavía tiene el primitivo portal gótico en su interior.
Sufrió daños importantes con el terremoto de 1755.
Hoy, el fuerte es utilizado como un lugar de ocio por los turistas que demandan Praia da Rocha y el adyacente puerto deportivo de Portimão.
El Fuerte de Santa Catarina, o Fortaleza de Santa Catarina de Ribamar, en el Algarve, se encuentra en el municipio de Portimão, distrito de Faro, en Portugal.
En una posición dominante en una elevación en el extremo oriental de Praia da Rocha, a lo largo del río Arade, esta fortificación defendió el asentamiento y el bar del río Arade, cooperando con el Fuerte São João do Arade en la orilla opuesta del río en Ferragudo.
