Im Zusammenhang mit der philippinischen Dynastie wurde diese Festung in der Regierungszeit Philipps III. Erbaut, wo sich bereits eine Kapelle für die Heilige Katharina von Alexandrien befand, in deren Inneren sich noch das primitive gotische Portal befindet.
Durch das Erdbeben von 1755 wurde es schwer beschädigt.
Heute wird das Fort als Erholungsort von Touristen genutzt, die Praia da Rocha und den angrenzenden Jachthafen Portimão nachfragen.
Das Fort Santa Catarina oder die Festung Santa Catarina de Ribamar an der Algarve befindet sich in der portugiesischen Gemeinde Portimão im Distrikt Faro.
In einer beherrschenden Stellung auf einer Anhöhe am östlichen Ende des Praia da Rocha entlang des Flusses Arade verteidigte diese Festung die Siedlung und den Fluss Arade und arbeitete mit dem Fort São João do Arade am gegenüberliegenden Ufer des Flusses in Ferragudo zusammen.
