In the context of the Philippine Dynasty, this fortification was built in the reign of Philip III, where there was already a chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, which still has the primitive Gothic portal inside.
It suffered major damage with the 1755 earthquake.
Today the fort is used as a leisure place by tourists who demand Praia da Rocha and the adjacent Portimão Marina.
The Santa Catarina Fort, or Santa Catarina de Ribamar Fortress, in the Algarve, is located in the Municipality of Portimão, Faro District, in Portugal.
In a dominant position on an elevation at the eastern end of Praia da Rocha, along the Arade River, this fortification defended the settlement and the Arade river bar, cooperating with the São João do Arade Fort on the opposite bank of the river in Ferragudo.
